Spotlighting Our Contestants

Last month we had our first chapter meeting in our new location--the LGBT Center in San Francisco. It was another very well attended meeting and one with a lot of great discussion and creative ideas. One of the ideas that came out of the meeting is the creation of a new Contestants section on our website. It's something we're definitely moving forward with and we'll have something live very soon. The idea is simple--create a presence on our site to announce accomplishments at IGRA rodeos of our Bay Area contestants throughout the year. Additionally, over time, we hope to start adding profiles and really celebrating all that our contestants do.

To pull this off, we need to hear regularly from all of you who compete in the arena. What rodeos are you planning on attending? What are you competing in? Have you won any ribbons or buckles that we should all know about? Have you achieved a "first" in the arena or do you have another good rodeo story to share? Just drop a note at anytime to news@bayarearodeo.com and we'll get it into the Contestant news page.

It's Official! Our 2007 Beneficiaries are...

Every year the Bay Area Chapter selects one or more local charities to be our beneficiary. At the end of the year, we make a sizable donation to the selected charities based on the money we raise from our rodeo and other activities throughout the year. These past few months we've spent a good amount of time at our chapter meetings considering several great charities for selection as the official chapter beneficiary for the year.

At the March meeting, a vote was taken among members and the final selection for 2007 was made. This year we have two beneficiaries:

Healing Waters
Healing Waters is a San Francisco-based organization with the mission to empower, inspire, and enrich the lives of people living with HIV/AIDS through wilderness adventures. For more information on their activities throughout 2007, visit www.hwaters.org

New Leaf
This is a vitally important organization that provides professional mental health, substance abuse, and social support services to lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, and questioning individuals of all ages in our community. For complete information on all that New Leaf does, visit www.newleafservices.org

Grand National Rodeo - Friday

We've got a great group of people getting together for the Grand National Rodeo on Friday. If you purchased your tickets via our website, they will be held at the Will Call window under your name when you arrive at the Cow Palace.

In case you've not been to the Grand Nationals before, a bit of advice... the rodeo performance starts promptly at 8 pm and moves at an incredibly tight schedule (they're not lying when they tell you things on arrival like "Barrel Racing begins at 9:23 pm")... the concert featuring Gary Allen will begin immediately after the last Bull Ride. For the best concert experience, grab your beverage of choice and head down into the arena itself... finally, the Grand Nationals is not just about what' happening in the rodeo arena. There's always a lot of good shopping to do and an on-going livestock show. Be sure to get there early and take it all in.

See you at the rodeo!

Chapter Meeting - April 10th

We've moved our monthly chapter meetings to a new location--The LGBT Center in San Francisco. We hope you can make our next meeting there on Tuesday, April 10th starting at 7:30 pm. The Center is located on Market at Octavia and our meeting room is #305 (just to the right off the elevators on the third floor). If you're arriving early, look for other members in the Three Dollar Bill cafe on the ground floor where you can grab a tasty meal, have a coffee or tea, or take advantage of the free wireless internet access.

This month we'll be continuing with our Open Forum meeting format as it's clearly creating a meeting filled with lots of creative discussion and is spawning some very good ideas. All members are encouraged to attend!

Buckin' Idol - Begins April 18th

We're kicking off a monthly signing contest at The Mint (Market @ Octavia) in San Francisco. We're calling it "Buckin' Idol" and it will be held on the 3rd Wednesday of every month. You can count on plenty of campy comments from our panel of "celebrity" judges and a whole lot of great signing. Winners from each months event will move on to compete in our "finals" in September where one lucky winner will be invited to be a featured performer at this year's Best Buck in the Bay. Watch for complete details on the contest coming soon.

2007 Royalty Competition - April 29th

On Sunday, April 29th, we'll be hosting our royalty competition at Marlena's (488 Hayes Street) in San Francisco. It's always a wonderful event and all our encouraged to come out to cheer on the contestants and welcome your new royalty team.

Also, watch for news in the coming week about the Fundraising events being held by our contestants. They're always a fun time. For more information on any aspect of this year's royalty competition, contact Travis Gardner, VP Administration, by emailing
vpadmin@bayarearodeo.com

Buckin' Spring - Dance - May 4th

It's time again for another great quarterly dance. And this time around we're trying something new. The dance will be held on Friday, May 4th (yes FRIDAY) at the Cathedral Hill Hotel (1101 Van Ness Ave., SF). It starts at 8 pm and we'll all be dancing well past Midnight. Admission will be $10, but as always if you're a member of GSGRA or become one that night, you get in free.

Help us get the word out early and often on this one. We're looking forward to making it one of our biggest nights yet!

Do You Have News? Comments? Suggestions?

The Bay Area Chapter board very much wants to hear from you. It is through your input that we can continue to make this organization better. Do you have news about upcoming events we should be letting everyone know about? Do you have comments or suggestions for future chapter events? Do you have feedback on what we're doing well, what we could do better, and perhaps what we're currently doing wrong? Don't hesitate to contact any of us by emailing board@bayarearodeo.com.
